The implementation of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan has the potential to bring about transformative changes in rural India, leading to improved living standards, enhanced opportunities and sustainable development. The Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) is a program initiated by the Government of India which aims at rural development. UBA aims to bring about holistic development in rural areas by addressing various aspects such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, sanitation, and livelihood opportunities. The UBA cell, along with the NCC, NSS and the YRC Unit of our college helps in bridging the different sections of society by promoting inclusive growth. The objectives of the extension activities include engaging faculty and students of higher educational institutions in understanding rural realities, identifying and selecting existing innovative technologies, device innovative solutions as per the local needs. Velammal Institute of technology has adopted five villages that include Chinnambedu. Kannigaiper, Karanodai, Amindanallur and Panchetti. Meeting with Gram panchayat leaders foster a sense of civic responsibility mutually and the following features were taken into account.
- Baseline survey of Five villages.
- Education & Literacy rate.
- Basic amenities available in the villages.
- Village infrastructure and services.
- Source of Energy and Power
By involving villagers in planning and implementing development projects, it empowers them to take charge of their own development and fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility. UBA promotes collaboration between academic institutions and rural communities. It provides opportunities for students, faculty and researchers to engage in fieldwork, data collection and applied research that addresses the local challenges and finds sustainable solutions. UBA initiatives include skill development programs that are implemented through a number of awareness programmes. UBA encourages the adoption of sustainable development practices that preserve natural resources and protect the environment. It serves as a platform for supporting policy changes and governance reforms that benefit rural communities. By highlighting the needs and priorities of rural areas, it influences decision-making at the local, state and national levels, leading to more effective and inclusive policies.

Tree Plantation Programme
The UBA and NSS Units of Velammal Institute of Technology organized a Tree Plantation Programme on 19 August 2024. A total of 25 volunteers actively participated in the programme and planted saplings in the adopted village. The activity aimed to promote environmental conservation, increase green cover, and create awareness about the importance of trees in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Seed Distribution Programme

On 19 March 2025, the UBA and NSS Units conducted a Seed Distribution Programme with the participation of 25 volunteers. Seeds were distributed to the local community to encourage kitchen gardening, sustainable farming, and self-reliance in food production. The programme helped create awareness about the value of growing plants and using natural resources in a responsible way.
Temple Cleaning Programme
The UBA and NSS Units organized a Temple Cleaning Programme on 24 March 2025. 25 volunteers took part in cleaning the temple premises and the surrounding area. The programme promoted cleanliness, hygiene, and civic responsibility while also encouraging the community to maintain public places in a neat and respectful manner.

Tree Plantation Programme

Another Tree Plantation Programme was conducted on 22 April 2025 by the UBA and NSS Units of Velammal Institute of Technology. 25 volunteers participated in planting saplings and supporting environmental development in the adopted village. The programme reflected the institution’s commitment to sustainability, rural development, and community service. These activities under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan highlight the institution’s continuous efforts to support rural communities, promote environmental awareness, and encourage student participation in social responsibility initiatives.
Tree Plantation Programme at Amindanallur Village
The UBA and NSS Units of Velammal Institute of Technology jointly organized a Tree Plantation Programme on 5 June 2025 at Amindanallur Village, one of the institution’s adopted villages. UBA volunteers, NSS volunteers, faculty members, and local residents actively participated in planting saplings within the school premises. The programme promoted environmental conservation, afforestation, and biodiversity while encouraging community participation towards building a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment.

Temple Cleaning Activity at Siruvapuri

The UBA and NSS Units organized a Temple Cleaning Activity on 11 October 2025 at Siruvapuri Temple with the active participation of 24 volunteers. The volunteers cleaned the temple premises and created awareness about maintaining hygiene in public places. The initiative promoted civic responsibility, environmental cleanliness, and community service in line with the objectives of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan.

On 11 November 2025, the UBA and NSS Units conducted a Tree Plantation Programme at the Government Middle School, Panchetti Village, one of the institution’s adopted villages. Volunteers, faculty members, students, and local residents participated in planting saplings to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices. The programme contributed to enhancing the green cover while reinforcing the institution’s commitment to rural development and environmental sustainability.
